1.5kg (1 month supply = £1.54 per day ) / 4.5kg (3 month supply = £1.35 per day)

What are Prebiotics?

Prebiotics are a non-digestible food source to support your horse’s existing good gut microbes. Unlike probiotics they do not contain live bacteria.

Prebiotics support the horses good bacteria, for optimum health, by stimulating the growth and activity of the existing microorganisms. So the helpful bacteria remain healthy. Studies prove the benefits of supplementing horses with Prebiotics for gut health.

It is still an ongoing study to understand what is best to feed your horse for gut support and therefore it is always recommended to speak to your vet for advice. There are many theories on Probiotics but nothing concrete, unlike with Prebiotics.

Synovium Horse Health bases its supplements on only proven science and trials. Always ask advice of your vet if you suspect your horse has ulcers.

Gut supplement for horses – Gastrosafe – Best ulcer supplement for horses
Veterinary gastric supplement for horses; for use on horses with a sensitive gut.

Horses are hindgut fermenters, therefore meaning that the large intestine is where breakdown of fibre takes place.

Fibre is the main component of the horse’s forage which is broken down by microorganisms to produce essential nutrients that the horse absorbes.

Because the hindgut is geared for fibre fermentation, it be sensitive due to receiving large amounts of undigested sugars.

Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS) frequently referred to as gastric ulcers in horses is a common problem.

Does my horse need an ulcer supplement? Does my horses have gastric ulcers (EGUS)?

Identifying those horses with gastric ulceration can be difficult as early signs can be confused with colic. Horses with ulcers can show mild colic-like symptoms so learn to read the signs of EGUS.

Equine gastric ulcers have been recognised more in recent years and it is important to understand the condition, why it can occur and the symptoms to look out for, to help prevent the high occurrence for future horses.

Some typical clinical signs of EGUS may include:

  • Poor or fussy appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Poor condition, dull coat
  • Reduced performance
  • Behavioural changes
  • Unwillingness to work
  • Mild or recurrent colic
  • Loose stools

Ulcers can affect any horse, but it is particularly prevalent in performance horses. They can occur in the horse’s stomach when the digestive acids come in contact with and attacks the protective lining of the stomach, mainly in the upper regions of the stomach.

The figures speak for themselves, with 60% of sports horses, 93% of racehorses and 50% of stabled foals showing to be affected by gastric ulceration.

Gastrosafe gut supplement for horses contains:

Calcium carbonate
Seaweed – Studies have shown that Laminaria hyperborea creates a floating raft of gel which helps to protect the non glandular part of the stomach from excess acid.

Horses produce stomach acid 24/7, which easily leads to acid splash causing ulceration on the non glandular parts of the stomach. Seaweed helps give that extra protection.

Magnesium Hydroxide
Fructooligosaccharides – proven prebiotics which provide food for and help stimulate good bacteria in the gut. Fructooligosaccharides are chains of specific types of carbohydrates which help promote the growth of organisms beneficial to the health of horses.

Prebiotics reach the hindgut where they are broken down by specific microbes to function. Helping to maintain a healthy gut environment and support efficient digestion and nutrient absorption.

Glutamine – Amino acid
Threonine – Amino acid important for mucin productin in the gut
Kaolin
